Antibiotics can kill bacteria disease. But inappropriate use of antibiotics can create antibiotic of the medicines that cure into a harmful drug.
Antibiotics could be the drug most often prescribed by doctors, but unfortunately a lot of inappropriate administration. Beware the threat of inappropriate use of antibiotics.
Prof. Iwan Dwiprahasto as a professor of pharmacology GMU said inappropriate use of antibiotics that could endanger public health globally or individually. Forms of abuse are quite varied ranging from inappropriate choose the type of antibiotic to the manner and duration of administration.
“Habit of giving antibiotics with incorrect dosage and timing of which is too short or too long will cause a fairly serious problem of resistance,” said Professor Iwan in health journalism workshop in the building FISIP UI, Depok, Saturday (26/3/2O11) .
In line with Prof. Iwan, representatives of the World Health Organization Dr Sharad Adhikary also said antibiotic is a drug that has saved many lives, but can not cure all ills. Antibiotics can only cure the diseases caused by bacterial infection.
Antibiotics are often purchased without a prescription and without explanation, people usually buy antibiotics by using the previous recipe. Though antibiotics have to go through the recipes and based on indications that appears.
“If used excessively, so that bacteria can mutate so immune. If all immune to it can lead to superbugs and can-can later go back to the era before antibiotics,” said Dr. Sharad.
Dr. Sharad said antibiotic resistance problem is not a new problem, but over time the more alarming and dangerous. WHO in 1998 has begun asking its member countries to overcome this problem.
Viral infection such as fever, flu, cough, sore throat and some ear infections are infections that should not be treated with antibiotics. This is because antibiotics kill the bacteria and not kill viruses.

Antibiotics kill or inhibit the growth of sensitive bacteria. But sometimes one bacterium can survive for being able to neutralize or avoid the effects of antibiotics. The bacteria that originally only sensitive can become resistant through genetic changes in cells that become resistant to antibiotics.
To avoid misuse of antibiotics, there are several things you can do are:
- Use antibiotics only by prescription, with appropriate dose and duration of prescriptions.
- Ask your doctor which medications that contain antibiotics and what its benefits.
- Inappropriate use of antibiotics can reduce effectiveness.
- Fever, cough, runny nose and diarrhea generally do not need antibiotics. Just need to eat nutritious food, drink and rest. If within 3 days did not recover, immediately went to the doctor.
- Do not use or buy antibiotics from a doctor or use an old recipe.
- The indiscriminate use of antibiotics can hurt yourself.
- Increasing public awareness and knowledge about antibiotics.
- Improve behavior on the use of antibiotics.
- Preventing and avoiding excessive use of antibiotics or even less.
“People should not treat yourself, and do not consume drugs that are not needed and take appropriate drug dose,” said Dr. Sharad.
