One of the medications given to cancer patients is chemotherapy. Recent studies have found a new chemotherapy cancer drugs that can prolong life of breast cancer patients.
Patients with metastatic breast cancer (cancer that has spread to other body parts) generally receive a lot of treatment.
Now researchers have found that cancer patients who received a new chemotherapy drugs (eribulin) can prolong life on average 2.5 months longer than patients who did not receive this treatment.
The study involved 508 women who were given eribulin and 254 women who received medical treatment options. Treatment options are generally doctors are hormonal or biological treatment approved for cancer treatment, radiotherapy or symptomatic treatment only.
This research represents the third stage in setting the standard potential new treatment for women with metastatic breast cancer. And the results obtained could prove beneficial for one’s survival.
This research was conducted by Dr Javier Vall d’Hebron Corters from University Hospital and Vall d’Hebron, Institute of Oncology in Barcelona, Spain. These findings were published online in The Lancet on 3 March 2011.
“This shows that the method for treating advanced breast cancer continues to grow and the treatment results obtained slightly better than before,” said Nancy U Lin from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School in Boston, as quoted from HealthDay, Friday (4 / 3 / 2011).
The results of this study interesting because it would encourage drug use eribulin more widely. And of course also be accompanied by the additional testing to determine its benefits in full.
“Further studies to see whether these drugs could provide the same benefit in women who have not received any treatment will also be more attractive,” said Dr. Stephanie Bernik, chief of surgical oncology at Lenox Hill Hospital, New York City.
